Do you use a text editor, all the day? Are you looking for an alternative? Then, this article is for you. All the operating systems, have their own text editor by default. For instance, Windows has its own text editor called “Notepad”, which is very light weighted and quick to do all our basic text editing things. The default text editor in an OS will be useful to some extent, but if you want to go full throttle, you have to switch to some advanced text editors available online.

Previously, I wrote about Notation, a simple text editor with plenty of shortcuts and Atom from GitHub, one of the powerful text editors for Windows. Today I’ve come with yet another text editor called “Poet” for Windows, which offers plenty of features and functions to the advanced users. Here’s how it works.

The Poet is a free text editor, which supports Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 versions. Windows 7 users need to download .NET framework 4.0 or higher for this application to work. In Windows 8 and 8.1, it is available by default. The Poet has both portable and installer version available on the site for download. Once you complete the installation, you will see a window as shown in the screenshot above. Unlike the default notepad for Windows, Poet has plenty of tools and options available to help the programmers and web developers.

A different set of plugins, tools and settings will be available in the “Content” category of the application. The Poet offers a tabbed interface, to edit multiple set of codes at the same time. If you have opened a number of tabs, you can use the “Navigator” option in the “Content” menu to quickly locate it. Also, to differentiate the tabs, you can edit the font and color of each and every tab using “Palette” option on the same “Content” menu. Apart from the tabs, you can work with multiple windows side by side or in any format as shown in the screenshot below.

By default, the application supports, HTML, XML, CSS, Java, C++ and many more languages. If you copy and paste or type the code in the supported programming languages, the syntax will be highlighted automatically. Some of the features and options will look similar to Notepad++, but it is definitely unique in some of its features and will be a good companion for programmers. If you are looking for a free notepad alternative for your Windows PC, Poet is worth giving a try. Share your experience with the app in the comments. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.
