We all seem to have multiple USB devices that we plug and unplug these days, and you’ve likely noticed the rather generic looking icons that represent these devices. However, these aren’t what you have to use — you can actually set up something like a USB drive (as well as other devices).
In the image below, you will see the generic icons that Windows uses by default (I am using Windows 8.1). Drive E is a Kingston DT101 G2 16 GB thumb drive, and that is what we will change.
First you will need to find the image you wish to use. I prefer the actual device, but you can use whatever you want. Once you have found and saved the image, then you will need to switch into an icon — I used AveIconifier, which is free. It does require your picture to be in PNG format, so you may need to convert it with an image editor, but even Microsoft Paint will do this. Drag and drop the image in the app, then drag and drop the new icon to a folder of your choice.
Now drag and drop you new icon onto the drive and open a Notepad and enter the following text:
[autorun] icon=icon.ico
Save this file to the drive as well. When you’re done, eject the drive and then re-insert it and then changes will have taken effect. That’s all there is to it.
