Updating Windows is just part of owning a computer. Your operating system needs to be updated to fix performance and security issues, and you’ve probably noticed that there are a number of updates that require your computer to restart. This is often inconvenient, so you’ll be pleased to learn that by editing the registry it is possible to prevent these automatic restarts.
As you’re editing the registry it is important that you take care to follow the instructions carefully. Launch the Registry Editor by pressing the Windows key and R simultaneously, typing regedit and pressing Enter. Click Yes at the UAC dialog.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\. If you do not see a WindowsUpdate key, click Edit > New > Key, name the new item Windows Update and press Enter.

Select the newly created key and then create another key beneath this called AU. Select this new key and click Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) value and name it NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers. Double click the new item and assign it a value of 1.

The only thing that’s left to do is to restart Windows to ensure the new settings are in place, and you will then no longer be plagued by unwanted restarts following an update.
